I currently work as head of research in the college of business at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). I have worked as an academic since 2014 following a period of four years when I undertook PhD studies full time. Prior to this I worked in the finance industry across multiple international banks and finance companies in Australia, Germany and in Ireland. My scholarly research interests span strategy and international entrepreneurship. I am particularly interested in the SME sector.

I recently completed a national study for the Department of Business Enterprise and Innovation on improving management development standards in SMEs in Ireland. This was an EU funded project and the report developed from this work ("Leading the Way: investment in management development for SME productivity and growth") will be jointly launched by the National Skills Council and the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs in November 2020.

Over recent years I have written and published papers on creative industries, business models, strategy and management issues. I am more recently developing my writing towards integrating sustainability and resilience into small and medium sized businesses. Although I have recently undertaken a large national survey of SMEs, I would normally classify myself as a qualitative researcher interested in delving into and exploring in depth the issues and challenges of SMEs in Ireland.

I am a board member of The Mill Enterprise Centre in Drogheda since mid-2019. It is important to me to volunteer my expertise on the ground so I can create real impact from my work to help businesses and policy makers. I have written reports for government departments on behalf of local business bodies such as a report on behalf of the Drogheda Chamber to IDA Ireland. I am the former chairperson of the Ana Liffey Drug Project and former Treasurer of the Red Door Project in Drogheda. Both of these I left when I went to work at the University of Bradford in the UK in 2014 for 4 years. I also spent a short time working at DCU before moving to the UK and worked as an associate and researcher at Smurfit Business School UCD for a short period upon my return. I have held my current position in TU Dublin since November 2018.

My main area of teaching is in strategic management and I was awarded a TU Dublin Learning Innovation award for my teaching in 2019. I also design and teach modules to support research students (mainly PhDs) including academic writing modules. My most recent publications are:

EGFSN/NCC (2020) Leading the Way: investment in management development for SME productivity and growth. Launch forthcoming.

Drogheda & District Chamber (2019) Drogheda: the place to invest, work, live, play and stay. Submission to IDA Ireland for their 2020-2024 strategy consideration.

I am married to Paddy McQuillan an independent local councillor and health care assistant in the disability sector in Louth. I live in Drogheda and I have one adult child who is an electrician living in Dublin. I have a greyhound dog that I adopted through HUG. I am interested in yoga, swimming and walking and I am obsessed with the wonder of mushrooms and fungi more generally.
