I have worked in Beaumont Hospital as a consultant microbiologist since 2007 and from 2010 to 2014 was the first national clinical lead in healthcare-associated infection and antimicrobial resistance prevention when I established the HSE national clinical programme and led national antibiotic and hand hygiene campaigns over this time.
At present, I am Senior Lecturer, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Consultant Microbiologist, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. Authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, most recently on aspects of the Beaumont Hospital COVID-19 response. I am lead author on 20 and senior (last) author on 28 publications. Recently, one of my co-authored teaching and learning publications was highlighted as an example of best practice in the ‘Healthcare without Harm’ report on undergraduate medical student antibiotic stewardship education.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to partake in media discussion (radio, TV, print media, online) on the topics of sepsis, healthcare-associated infection, infection prevention, C. difficile, antimicrobial resistance and most recently COVID-19.
