My name is Fiona McHale, I am a qualified PE and Biology teacher and am currently undertaking a PhD in the University of Limerick in the area of physical activity behaviours in adolescents.
I have represented Mayo at senior level from 2004-2018, captaining the team in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, winning a Div1 National league in 2007 and an All-Star in 2016. I play my club football with Carnacon and am proud to have been involved in 6 All-Ireland club titles (2002, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2017).
Along with playing the sport, I have a keen interest in coaching science and have coached UL ladies to 2 O’Connor Cup titles. My most recent coaching exploits were with the Claremorris Senior men’s team in the 2018/2019 season. I am a coach educator with the LGFA and in particular on the Gaelic 4 Teens programme where I am a programme ambassador.
Off the field, I am a proud advocate for the advancement of gender equality in sport and was part of a group who set up the Women’s Gaelic Player’s Association in 2015 undertaking the role of secretary for 4 years. I am also part of the Sport Ireland Women in coaching working group that was set up in March 2020.
In January 2019, I completed the Women on Air training programme with RTE. This was a fantastic opportunity and experience that provided me with a platform and confidence to participate on shows such as Game on, Sunday Sport and Off the Ball.
