I am a Senior Lecturer in constitutional and administrative law at the School of Law, University of Limerick.
I am a first class honours graduate of UCC (BCL (Law and French) 2007, LLM (by Research) 2008, PhD 2012, PGCTHLE 2013). My research Master's examined the topic of disciplining judges and my PhD, for which I was awarded an IRCHSS Government of Ireland Scholarship, considered the drafting of the 1922 Irish Free State Constitution. I undertook a Post Doctoral Fellowship in UCC and held lectureships in UCC and DCU before joining the School of Law at UL.
My research interests lie in the areas of Constitutional Law, Legal History, Judicial Politics and Comparative Law and I have published nationally and internationally in these areas. My monograph on the 1922 Constitution was published by Manchester University Press in 2016. I have also co-authored books on the Irish Constitution and the Irish Legal System and have produced a number of edited collections. I have advised the Oireachtas on law reform on a number of occasions. My work has also been cited several times in the Dáil and the Seanad and also by the Irish superior Courts. I am editor-in-chief of the Irish Judicial Studies Journal.
I am a frequent contributor to the media as an authoritative and informative voice on legal and constitutional matters. I have appeared on TV programmes such as Prime Time, Tonight with Vincent Browne, The Tonight Show and on Oireachtas TV. I have been interviewed on various radio programmes on a number of different issues over the last few years, including on RTE's Morning Ireland, Sean O'Rourke, News at One, Drivetime, the History Show, Marian Finucane, Radio na Gaeltachta, Brendan O'Connor, Saturday with Katie Hannon, Newstalk's Breakfast, Lunchtime with Ciara Kelly, Ivan Yates the Hard Shoulder, the Last Word with Matt Cooper, as well as various local radio stations and podcasts. I have been quoted in many newspapers and I have also written articles in publications such as the Irish Times, Irish Examiner, Independent, Guardian, TheJournal.ie.
