I am a Lecturer in Human Rights Law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUI Galway, and a practising lawyer (currently a tenant of 33 Bedford Row, Barristers’ Chambers, London). I am also Director of the Human Rights Law Clinic at the ICHR, NUIG, which involves Master’s and PhD students in assisting community-based movements for social change in Ireland and internationally.

My PhD research focused on the rights of older people to freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment and arbitrary detention in care settings.

My legal practice is in the broad area of human rights; I am currently involved in a case against Ireland before the United Nations Committee Against Torture (Coppin v Ireland). I previously practised as a family law barrister in London, and with Leigh Day Solicitors on the mass environmental tort case of Bodo Community v Shell.

I was previously Senior Research and Policy Officer for the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, where I was responsible for policy development and public advocacy in the areas of human rights-based policing, data protection rights, civil society freedoms, reproductive rights, protection from abuse in institutional settings, and accountability and reparation for ‘historical’ injustice.

I have led the legal work for the Justice for Magdalenes campaign and the Justice for Magdalenes Research group since 2010, and I am also co-Director of the Clann Project — a voluntary, award-winning initiative which is gathering testimony, researching and advocating regarding the human rights issues arising from the forced separation of unmarried mothers and their children in Ireland. I am involved with a coalition of survivors, practitioners and academics calling for truth-telling regarding so-called ‘historical’ institutional, gender-based and care-related abuses in Ireland. I have been vocal in calling for an end to State and religious censorship of information and the ‘gagging’ of abuse survivors.
