I am an award-winning journalist (Channel 4 and RTE) and have worked as a producer and presenter for RTE Television, and RTE Radio, Channel 4 and UTV. I have also worked in print journalism as Irish correspondent for the international weekly religious magazine 'The Tablet'.
I took leave of absence from RTE to work as Director of Communications for the Jesuits in Ireland and have developed their communications strategy by producing and presenting video and podcast interviews for their websites and social media platforms.
I continue to work as a freelance journalist contributing to BBC, RTE radio and television, Reuters and international media outlets commenting on current affairs, as well as social and religious issues.
My academic background is in philosophy, and I guest lecture on the area of symbols, hermeneutics, and communication. As a qualified Spiritual Director, I conduct workshops on the power of symbol and story in spiritual development.
In 1994 I set up my own media training programme to promote on-air the voices of those under-represented in the media or on the margins of society. Since then I have conducted training for a wide range of organisations including UNHCR, Women’s Aid, Barnardos, The Irish Traveller Movement, the National Woman's Council, and Trocaire.
I also trained women involved in community and local politics in the North, working with the Woman's Coalition there.
One of the most rewarding experiences of all the training I gave was when I prepared the entire Burmese government in exile to appear on radio and television in Europe.
That sense of satisfaction has been renewed since I started working as the media trainer for Woman on Air. It has been a privilege for me to meet so many wonderfully talented women from all sectors of Irish society and to help them contribute to changing Irish society by having their voices heard and their expertise shared.
I am Derry-born and live in Dublin with my two adult children.
