I am a Biochemist with expertise in Infection Biology, particularly in respiratory infections, as a result of 18 years research in this field. In particular, I focus on how pathogens interact with human cells and ways of preventing that interaction.

As a result, I also have expertise in vaccines and the immune response. My research group and I have identified several vaccines against bacterial infections. We are currently in the final stages of development of the first of these and aim to get approval to test it in human trials in 2021.

I also have a keen interest in studying infection in people with cystic fibrosis. People with CF experience chronic infections that impact their well-being and health throughout their lives. I have been studying infection in people with CF since 2003.

I am the Head of Biochemistry in UCD and an Associate Professor in the School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science in UCD. I lead a research group of 7 scientists, including 6 PhD students that all work in the area of infection biology and vaccine discovery.

I also coordinate a European Vaccine Research programme, called BactiVax, which is comprised of 12 other vaccine experts and 15 PhD students in eight countries.

I am also very interested in Vaccine Advocacy.
