I’m a professional academic historian (PhD TCD 2011) with an earlier career in newspapers and magazines journalism. I lecture in European History at Carlow College. I research social history, specialising in the history of disease and in particular, the 1918-19 influenza pandemic and also infectious disease in Ireland in the 19th and 20th century. I’ve also published on newspaper history - including women in media - and on Protestants in 20th century Ireland.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I’ve contributed extensively, as an interviewee, to broadcast media, offering a historical perspective on how we could expect the pandemic to impact on society, and how we could prepare. I’ve appeared on (RTÉ) the Seán O’Rourke Show, Morning Ireland, the History Show, (BBC) documentaries and podcasts on BBC RADIOS 4,5 and Ulster, and on BBCNI TV news, virgin media, The Late Late Show and Newstalk's The Last Word, as well as Tipp FM, Carlow Kilkenny Local Radio, South East Radio and Waterford Local Radio. Many of these are on YouTube or on the relevant media sites.
