I am Professor of Communication and Media at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen and also serve as the University's Gender Equality Champion.

My research focuses on women’s use of the media, particularly for political purposes. My sources encompass both historical newspaper archives and social media, and in particular, I have published on digital parenting, Mumsnet, blogging, women during the First World War and the Scottish women’s suffrage campaign. My research has been funded by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, AHRC, The Carnegie Trust for the Universities in Scotland, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.

My books include 'The Scottish Suffragettes and the Press' (2017 Palgrave Macmillan) and 'The Politicization of Mumsnet' (2020 Emerald). This book investigates the growing politicization of Mumsnet and its use by politicians to influence middle-class women in the UK. The site's discussion topics go far beyond traditional 'mothering' subjects and

encompass politics, feminism and current affairs. Understood as a safe space

for gender-critical voices, the site has spawned real-life activism and

continues to be both praised and attacked for its support of free speech on

controversial subjects.

I have excellent experience on contributing to public debate via radio, television, blogs, newspaper opinion pieces and general media interviews including BBC Woman's Hour, BBC Radio Scotland, The Scotsman, The Press & Journal, The Sun, The Daily Mail and STV.
